AI for Video Surveillance - Technology Overview and Future Directions

AI for Video Surveillance - Technology Overview and Future Directions

November 20, 2019, 1:15 PM - 2:00 PM

Theater 2

This session provides a practical overview of AI technology and how it can be used in video surveillance for security. First off, the session will provide a comprehensive non-technical grounding into current AI approaches and technologies, and implications for security. We’ll define what AI is, and compare it to human capabilities. Then provide a more detailed overview of AI technology. This includes a brief history of AI and its current applications, deep learning vs classical AI and an overview of supervised and unsupervised learning approaches, including anomaly detection.

AI gains its power through interactions with humans. Therefore, it is important to understand the personal and business implications of AI. In the second portion of the session, we’ll discuss current ethical issues such as bias and protection of privacy. We propose using AI to empower security operators by supporting human judgement. Thirdly, we’ll discuss practical issues of using AI for video surveillance. This will include problem definition, selection of software, and other issues such as camera selection and placement. We then take the knowledge learned and apply it to a practical video surveillance case study. Finally, we look at the outlook and industry trends for video surveillance.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Explain the difference between AI and human decision-making processes.
2. Compare and contrast different techniques used in contemporary AI products, including supervised and unsupervised learning, and classical vs deep learning approaches.
3. Explain business implications, and human impacts of bias and privacy issues, while recommending appropriate safeguards.
4. Select and justify appropriate software and cameras for AI assisted video surveillance for a given security application.
5. Plan and strategize security expenditures based on an understanding of AI industry trends and directions.
